When should I hire a family lawyer?
You do not need a lawyer to read a definition. You do need one when a wrong step is expensive, unsafe, or hard to undo. The list below is a prompt, not a diagnosis.

- There is family violence or a child at risk.
- You have been served with court documents.
- Someone wants you to sign a BFA or a minute of consent orders soon.
- A divorce is becoming final and property is unfinished — time limits run.
- There is a business, trust, family farm, or overseas asset.
- One of you wants to move a child a long way (relocation).
A conversation can still be enough
A single advice session can tell you whether FDR is the next step, whether your “agreement” is a plan or an order, and which documents to gather. That is often the highest-value hour in a low-conflict matter. See Legal Aid and costs if private fees are the barrier.
Bring a timeline, a list of assets and debts you already know, and the documents you have been asked to sign. Do not bring a speech. The lawyer can work with facts. They cannot work with a novel.
When self-help is usually enough to start
Reading this site. Using Family Relationships Online. Applying for a straightforward child support assessment. Writing down a safe fortnight for children. Downloading a current divorce form from the court — and then reading it slowly. None of those steps requires a private retainer. Several of them still benefit from a later check.

Time limits are a reason, not a mood
Married property and maintenance applications often face a clock that runs from when a divorce becomes final. De facto applications often run from the end of the relationship. Read time limits after divorce and separation. If you are inside a few months of a date you cannot defend, that is this-week work.
How to choose the person once you decide to go
Read choosing a family lawyer. Ask who will do the work, what is in scope, and what blows the estimate. Walk away from “we will win custody.” That sentence is marketing, not a plan.

When should I hire a family lawyer?+
Get advice promptly if there is family violence or child-safety risk, a court date, a proposed BFA or consent-order minute you do not understand, a complex asset pool, a relocation, or a limitation period that might be running. Early advice is often cheaper than repairing a filed mistake.
Can I do it myself?+
Some straightforward, low-conflict divorces and simple parenting plans are completed without private lawyers. Self-represented people still have the same duties of disclosure and the same best-interests test. Difficulty is not a character flaw — it is a reason to get help.
